This handmade batik painting depicts the ancient Chinese legend of Hou Yi, shooting at the suns. Long ago, there were ten suns - sons of the King of Heaven, spirit birds - who took turns lighting the heavens. But one day, they decided to play and appeared in the sky together. Their fearsome flame caused a deadly drought on earth, scorching crops and burning grass; people were not plagued by both hunger and wild beasts. So people selected Hou Yi, the best archer of the nation, to shoot down the suns. After the suns spurned his attempts to get them to return to their divine home, he shot them from the sky.
