Beijing Opera Sculpture, 'Bao Zheng'

This framed wall hanging features Bao Zheng, a famous character in Beijing opera and Chinese history.  Hand cast and hand painted in traditional Beijing opera costum and makeup.  In opera or drama, he is often portrayed with a black face and a white crescent shaped birthmark on his forehead.

Bao Zheng  (999~1062) was a much-praised judge from Song China. His job title was the Mayor of KaiFeng, the capital city at the time. Because of his renowned fairness, he was called "Blue-Sky Bao" or "Lord Bao" by the commoners. He was also nicknamed "Darkie Bao" by his enemies due to his very dark complexion.  His crescent shaped birthmark on his forehead also made him very recognizable in Chinese historical plays; also one of the most loved and respect characters.

About the artist, Duan Guosheng

“I love the opera.  When I first watched a local troupe performing, I was just a little boy.  I was immediately drawn to it.  Learning the art of opera singing has been the best experience for me.  I hope my work will be displayed in homes of young people.  Let the sculptures remind them the wonderful art of Beijing Opera.” Read more...
