Beijing Opera Flax Mask, 'Dou Erdun'

Instead of using paints, the artist uses different color flax strings made this colorful Beijing opera mask wall hanging.  This mask is Dou Erdun, who was a Robin Hood type of character in Qing Dynasty (1644~1911) China.  He stole the Emperor's steed to take revenge on the Royal Guard chief.   His story was adapted to a very popular Beijing Opera play.  Read more...

About the artist, Guo Yanhua

“I grew up playing with flax.  I like the feel of flax fabric.  Clothing made from flax is still my favorite, especially in the summer,’ says Guo Yanhua, “I came home after college and saw my neighbor weaving flax strings.  It reminded me how popular my childhood handmade flax doll among my friends.  I want to combine the traditional Chinese culture with flax to create something beautiful and useful.  So I started making Beijing opera masks with flax.  I think the look and the texture of the material really make the difference.  I feel great knowing people are hanging my artworks on their walls.” Read more...
