Paper Cut (framed), 'Warrior Portrait from Beijing Opera'

These are handmade paper cuts of warriors from Beijing opera plays.  The facial makeups of Beijing opera are various designs of lines andcolored patches painted on the faces of certain operatic characters. They follow traditionally fixed patterns for specific types to highlight the disposition and quality in the personages, so that the audience may immediately know whether they are heroes or villains, whether they are kind or treacherous and wicked.

The warrior portait paper cut is framed between two pieces of glasses to give you the best view of the delicate lines and cuts of the artwork.

“I was born into paper cutting.  Wei County is famous for its paper cutting.  My grandmother was a very skillful paper cutting artist.  She started teaching me when I was 7.  Back then, paper cutting were only made for holiday decorations.  I remember whenever I saw grandmothers sitting together cutting paper, then I knew the holiday feast was coming,” says Yan.
