The original elephant candleholder was unearthed at a Tang Dynasty (A.D.618~A.D.907) tomb. The elephant standing on the oval lotus base carries a group of six candleholders on its back.

The body of the elephant candleholder is embossed and painted with detailed decoration ornaments. Elephants became popular in China as the development of Buddhism in ancient time. Elephant has been a symbol of peace and fortune.

About the artist, Gao Xiaofei

Luoyang in Henan province is a city with a long history.  Luoyang has been the capital for many dynasties through out Chinese history.  Gao Xiaofei was born in a village near Luoyang.  His family has been trading and repairing antiques for generations.  Gao has a special interest in pottery.  Inspired by the exquisiteness of the ancient pottery sculptures, he started his workshop replicating the artworks in 1994.  Read more...
