Wood Carving, 'Guan Yin'
Another design by our root carving artist, Chen Xi. This wood statue features the Buddhist God of Mercy, Guan Yin. When Buddhism first arrived in China, Guan Yin was a male buddha. In the process of adapting Buddhism within the Chinese culture, Guan Yin became a female figure. Her responsibilities include, fertility, safety, and compassion. This wood statue uses the natural form of the root and branch of the tree to form the body of Guan Yin. The craftsmanship is amazing, you can even see the folds of her robe.

About the artist, Chen Xi
“I have always been looking for ways to create unique art. Woodcarving is a family business. We have been making decorated wood window frames for generations. But I always wanted to be more creative. “ Chen Xi explains,” After I saw a table made from a old tree root, I fell in love with the idea of root carving. Using dead tree roots, each piece is unique. I can incorporate the original shape and texture of the tree roots into the sculpture. The pine tree root also gives the sculpture a natural wax-like finish, along with the nice fresh smell.”
