Pottery Horse Statue, 'Man Playing Polo'

This Tang Tri-color pottery statue features a man on a horse playing polo.  The man riding on the horse in Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618~A.D.907) clothing, raising his arm and ready to strike the ball.  The movement of the horse is very life-like, showing the horse running fast to chase the ball. The horse is glazed in light green, the rider is hand painted with facial expressions. 

Polo, also called as Striking Ball or Drive, is one kind of sports that players will hit a ball with long stick riding on the horses; it is also one of the oldest sports in the world. It appeared in China since Han Dynasty (B.C. 206~A.D.220), but well-accepted in Tang Dynasty. According to the historical records, lots of emperors of Tang were entranced with this game.

About the artist, Gao Shuiwang

Gao Shuiwang, 48 years old, was born in the Stone Mountain Village, Henan province of China. Many of the villagers are very good part time craftsmen making Tang Tri-color pottery. Gao grew up hanging around those craftsmen. Instead of playing during his free time, Gao spent his childhood learning the secret of making tri-color pottery. He has received the “Outstanding Folk Artist” award, by the UNESCO for his remarkable skill. Read more...
