Pottery Statue, 'Tang Lady Playing a Paixiao'

This Tri-color pottery statue features a voluptuous Tang femalemusician playing a Paixiao (an ancient wind instrument in China).  This group of statues present anofficial female band, who played music for the royal court of TangDynasty (A.D. 618~A.D. 907).

These elegant but plump women follow the standard of beauty prevailed during that time. They wear their hair in buns, dress in wide-sleeves long robes and traditional cloud-head shoes, playing different traditional Chinese music instruments.

About the artist, Gao Shuiwang

Gao Shuiwang, 48 years old, was born in the Stone Mountain Village, Henan province of China. Many of the villagers are very good part time craftsmen making Tang Tri-color pottery. Gao grew up hanging around those craftsmen. Instead of playing during his free time, Gao spent his childhood learning the secret of making tri-color pottery. He has received the “Outstanding Folk Artist” award, by the UNESCO for his remarkable skill. Read more...
