Wooden Nuo Mask, 'Home Guardian'
Carved out of one single piece of wood, the mask shows both the fine craftsmanship and creativity of the artist. The bold style and harsh lines created a very fierce-looking guardian.
The mask is based on the Home Guardian from Nuo dramas. The Home Guardian is in charge of the safety of every home in the village. The two heads of the guardian will take turns day and night protecting the people. The big mouth he has will swallow anything that tries to sneak into the homes.

About the artist, Hu Fayun
“I learned wood carving from my grandfather. He was a very famous mask maker. I started learning since I was 8 years old. I started on my own when I was 17. Nuo drama and ceremony are still very important to our lives. As a mask maker, my duty is to make the best masks and help the actors to bring the characters to life. I am glad that my masks have become so popular. I am happy that the tourists can take one of the masks home, bringing our culture to their family and friends.”
