Wooden Nuo Mask, 'Lion Gate Guardian'(Large)

This mask of the gate guardian is made of poplar wood. Hand carved by artist Hu Fayun.  The mask also has a detachable wooden sword across the mouth.

The face of the guardian does not look much like the traditional dragons from Chinese Legends. This is because the gate guardian is one of the dragon’s nine sons. The nine sons of the dragon all look differently and has different abilities. Villagers from Southwest China still hang this type of mask above their doors to protect their families.

This special mask, also called “Tun Kou”, acts as a gate guardian. The intimidating looks and big mouth will scare away evil spirits and blow away bad wind.

About the artist, Hu Fayun

“I learned wood carving from my grandfather.  He was a very famous mask maker.  I started learning since I was 8 years old.  I started on my own when I was 17.  Nuo drama and ceremony are still very important to our lives.  As a mask maker, my duty is to make the best masks and help the actors to bring the characters to life.  I am glad that my masks have become so popular.  I am happy that the tourists can take one of the masks home, bringing our culture to their family and friends.” Read more...
